About the Organisation

Youth Action & Policy Association NSW (YAPA) is the peak organisation representing young people and youth services in NSW.

YAPA works towards a society where all young people are supported, engaged and valued.

The role of YAPA is to:

  • Monitor and respond to government policies and proposals affecting young people;
  • Promote and advocate on issues affecting young people and youth services;
  • Bring young people and youth workers together to act on issues affecting them;
  • Work to raise a positive profile of young people in the media and in the community;
  • Provide training, forums and conferences to young people and youth workers;
  • Provide information and referral; and
  • Produce a range of resources, publications and newsletters.

About the Keeping It Together sector support project

NSW Family Services Inc (FamS) and the Youth Action and Policy Association (YAPA) have been jointly funded to implement the Keeping It Together sector support project, by the Family and Community Programs Unit in Community Services, NSW Department of Human Services. The Project will provide assistance to services in the non-government youth and family services sectors that are impacted by the implementation of the Keep Them Safe Action Plan (KTS) and proposed changes to the Community Services Grant Program.

About the Opportunity

Youth Action & Policy Association has an exciting opportunity for a part time Statewide Youth Sector Support Officer to coordinate and deliver support activities for NSW youth services, under the Keeping It Together Partnership Project with NSW Family Services Inc

Based in Surry Hills, the successful candidate will be primarily responsible for supporting youth services on issues arising from the implementation of the NSW Government's Keep Them Safe (KTS) Action Plan and proposed changes to funding under the Community Services Grants Program (CSGP)

More specifically this will involve;

  • Developing model policies and procedures that services can use in the transition to the new KTS environment;
  • Establishing effective mechanisms to for mass communication with the
    sector, in conjunction with the YAPA Communications Officer;
  • Developing resources and training to build the capacity of the youth sector to
    respond to changes created by the implementation of KTS and proposed
    changes to CSGP funding;
  • Organising information and consultation forums with NSW services on issues
    relating to KTS and CSGP changes, in conjunction with project and sector
    partners;
  • Supporting local working groups to develop solutions to challenges faced in the
    transition period;
  • Developing responses on specific issues that come up during the transition, providing advice government agencies; and
  • Developing surveys and other sector research to build the evidence base for
    effective service delivery to young people.

The successful applicant will have a demonstrated knowledge of and experience in the non-government youth sector across NSW and in mediating constructive relationships between government and non-government representatives. 

The ability to organise and present information in verbal and written formats (appropriate for both government and non-government audiences) and to organise events (including seminars, training and conferences) is required.

This is a pivotal 'hands-on' role that actively pursues social justice. Accordingly, a genuine commitment to supporting young people, a high level of self-motivation and a willingness to travel, as well as a valid driver's licence, is essential.

Candidates with an understanding of issues and service delivery in rural and regional areas and/or with media skills will be held in high regard.
