PRA provides a range of recovery services through community support services, employment services, structured activities programs and community businesses.
PRA is also Australia's largest specialist employer of people with psychiatric disability, each year providing training and supported employment opportunities (through community businesses) to almost 600 people with mental illness in 6 locations across Sydney. About the Opportunity
Psychiatric Rehabilitation Australia (PRA) is seeking dedicated candidates for the following exciting opportunities:
Senior Mental Health Worker - Young, NSW
Mental Health Worker - Liverpool, Queanbeyan, Surry Hills, NSW
Mental Health Worker - Caboolture, QLD
In the Mental Health Worker roles, you will be part of a new transitional recovery program (funded by the Department of Communities) supporting adults in the community with a mental illness with moderate to high support needs. The service assists adults with a mental illness leaving hospital to successfully move into the community, expand their personal vision for the future, confidence, skills and networks for community participation. The focus is on assisting people on their recovery journey for up to twelve months.
In the Senior Mental Health Worker role, you will be responsible for working with consumers in community based accommodation, developing and implementing psychosocial rehabilitation programs and opportunities, in conjunction with them, and aligning with their individual recovery plans.
In terms of direct duties delivered to consumers on a case by case basis, these may include:
- Developing skills for managing home and finances;
- Exploring mainstream community opportunities including sport, leisure, fitness, recreation, education and employment;
- Developing skills that encourage people to participate in community activities;
- Mentoring and peer support;
- Developing skills for the self management of mental and general health;
- Advocacy; and
- Joint care planning with the mental health team, private psychiatrist, psychologist or GP.
For each of the positions, successful applicants will have tertiary qualifications in Human Services or Behavioural Sciences, and a strong commitment to consumer driven recovery and psychosocial rehabilitation. A current driver's licence is mandatory.
For the senior position, you will also need experience in supervising front-line staff, and have an ability to problem solve effectively.
As you will be frequently engaging with consumers, family members, colleagues and service providers, you will need to be a caring and understanding individual, with strong communication and organisational skills, and the ability to work in challenging situations. You will have experience in motivating consumers and assisting people to achieve their personal goals. An enthusiasm for working with people with a mental illness, and a genuine desire to help others and improve the community is essential!
